WEEK FIVE

Week 5 saw the completion of the course, and me finishing my assignment!

As requested I have narrowed down my model to 5 images:

Oprah's building draws on the classical orders to establish power. The columns establish power and beauty through analogy to the 'divine', human form. these orders were utilized extensively throughout the classical world for revered buildings such as temples. In modern society they are used mainly through the Vitruvian principal of 'ecconomia'; demonstrating to the public through their cost and ornament, that this is a building of significance, a public building. I personally find this is very similar to how Oprah portrays herself; open, giving, established and for the people.

This shot shows that Oprah's building is comprised of an amphitheater and a stadium. the recessed amphitheater is the stage of Oprah's life; facilitating viewing for countless eager onlookers. The siting of the building demonstrates the way I feel Oprah 'watches over the world'; through her talk show she is able to gain insight and friendship into and with some of the most powerful people in the world; highlighting that her power lies in vision and the public forum.

Conversely to Oprah; Lady Gaga's power is not only developed through exposure; but also secrecy. This building; formed with a stage in the middle and 360 degree views presents a dichotomy between private and exposed. The floor oscillates between glass or air and solid concrete. The circular wall is punctuated by large gaps offering changing views from both inside and outside of the building. The significance of this is that Gaga's onstage and offstage personalities are not attached to one another. Her epic costumes hail back to the Dada principal of abstraction and disguise. Thus she effectively is a different person on stage, adding to her mystery and allure. it is because of this mystery that she is so interesting, evidenced by her millions of followers in the realm of social media; a good barometer of her power.

The stair is an essential element. not only does it provide a beautiful play of line, curve and light; it elevates the observer up and onto the stage; establishing the feeling of being on display which is them so powerfully contrasted with the enclosed panels. The play of light through this circular structure is important from an architectural point of view too, and this angle shows how effective the play of the light can be.

For the meetign place, I decided that a good representation of a collision of their power was a place of harmony. Although they seem to be extremely different; in essence both Lady Gaga and Oprah derive their power from the same source: inner strength. Oprah has a charisma which for decades has drawn people to her honesty and warmth. It is these people who are inspired by her who collectively make her powerful. Similarly with Gaga, her ability to pull off the seemingly embarrassing and turn it into something which defines her is derived from a strong individuality. This meeting place facilitates these strong personalities firstly by being large; but also peaceful, a place for reflection and rejuvenation. The dining table is gently placed in the middle and supported by opposing, yet interlocked spheres; symbolic of the use of the space.

I also captured some videos to demonstrate the qualities of my buildings as you move in and around them. The videos are more useful to me that photos because they give a sense of spatial perspective and a holistic feel of movement as the light and perspectives change:

This video is of the elevator from the bridge down to the meeting place.

This video is of the lift behind Oprah's place, then moving through the building

This video is of Gaga's building; moving down on to the lift and up towards the bridge.

All my models were compiled into one and the uploaded to 3D warehouse. This is the link to that model:

WEEK FOUR

Week four once again saw a lot of busy work in the labs. frustratingly; sometimes with little to show expect little yellow dots all over my crysis model. In consultation with Tim, I decided to change (fairly significantly) some elements of my model including the bridge; Lady Gaga's building, Oprah's building and the orientation in the landscape... so basically all of it!

Gaga's building went from:
to:

 Oprah's building went from:
To:

The bridge went from:
 To:

 The Orientation went from:
To:

Frustratingly I spent alot of time looking at things like this:
which basically meant "HAHA your model doesn't work."

WEEK THREE

Week 3 was a fairly intense week. just as in experiment 2; we were again exploring the world of drawn textures, but this time to do with movement.

The 6 words i used to describe movement were:
-Rotation
-Linear
-Scalar Translation
-Static
-Wave
-Sloth

Rotation

Linear

scalar- notice the inclusion of the scalar transformation constant lambda in the top right corner. lambda represents a change in size to the scale of an undetermined coefficient.
static

wave

sloth

Below is a sample of the way in which the textures were used in my model:

WEEK TWO

This week we were drawing perspectives of T-shaped prism's. We were required to demonstrate the relationship in space between 3 prisms. this is a selection of 9 of such drawings:

As well as this, we needed to complete the animation tutorial and hence construct a lift in our environment. At first I struggled with the concept and procedure; but as i understood the concept, the procedure became much more logical. I found it very interesting to be able to view my models as they changes with reference to my viewpoint. This type of 3D modeling has dramatic benefits in the world of designing. The end result is so much more explanatory than a series of sketches:

This picture captures the structure as the lift leaves the platform.

This image is of the same building as the lift climbs higher towards its destination, demonstrating the power of changing perspective.

WEEK ONE

For my environment I chose the dramatic and aptly named Rocky Mountains. formed by relentless swelling and folding deep within the earth; much like my clients, the Rocky mountains have risen from anonymity to iconic status.

As for my mashup; my concept of power revolved around exposure and publicity. Amongst other things I used the concept of Ive's work process as an analogy to how celebrities 'sculpt' and 'carve' themselves; often with use of silicone. I drew reference to the way in which Lady Gaga's prowess with the social media has influenced her power, and demonstrated Oprah's power with her ability to draw an A-list crowd.

In class this week, we were required to produce a series of One point perspectives exploring T prisms in space. These were quite easy to draw; however just as with our axonometrics last experiment; the real challenge come in having the spacial awareness to draw the same shape from different angles. below is a selection of 9 of such drawings:

EXPERIMENT2: week 3

This week we were once again producing texture; 36x6x6 squares dealing with a transition from light to dark. the end idea being that we would use a dark, medium and light texture on specific rectangles on our model.

I initially was ding textures that were more "artistic" in my tutor's words. Tim wanted me to do something more mathematical and rigorous. that is how i came up with the above textures. They all deal with differing degrees of opacity; often beginning close to, or at 1 and becoming more transparent from there. I particularly enjoyed the use of concentric circles and point-rule patterns.

I implanted these new texture into my Crysis level:

I used a dark texture for around Freud's workspace indicating privacy and deep internal contemplation. My ElectroLiquid Aggregation deals with freuds internal focus:
notice how the dark texture is complimented by the alcove formed by the rectangles and also the deep ravine behind.
I used a light texture on newtons work space such that his attention would be diverted out, away from his space toward the world around him, just as the ElectroLiquid Aggregation suggests:
The front two rectangles are the lighter texture. The foreground shows the medium texture discussed below.

I applied the medium texture to the main transit route; simply the mid range texture is an equilibrium to the two trains of thought taking place at either end. It thus serves to be a place of harmony and community for the two clients; my ElectroLiquid Aggregation does leave a space for harmony:

Another task set was to continue to develop our landscape; I had some fun with this and decided to create a volcano:
Standing on volcano looking towards studio's
getting hot

I thought perhaps in their spare time my clients could run a skydiving business. The catch in crysis being that as long as you hit the water first you will be fine; not needing a parachute would dramatically reduce overhead costs.

I then had to make additions to the model to assist in my ElectroLiquid Aggregation. For Newton I created another small, uninhibited deck/seat which newton could have his feet on as he contemplated his world, or simply pace along from end to end:

The very front deck was added and lightly textured to correlate with my ElectroLiquid Aggregation

For Freud, i made his environment more enclosed by adding a further low wall to his alcove. I did not make the wall too high; because although they deal in elements removed from the physical world.... psychologists do have a grasp on and connection with the physical world through their internal consideration:
